Cafe Planet
Java in Historical Fort Langley, Greater Vancouver
As soon as I showed up at the cafe, the friendly co-co-owner of the establishment
Victor Larichev, 42, rushed to me with a bottle of beer: "Sorry, Mitch.
For now we just have bottled beer. What would you like - Guinness, Heineken,
Cocanee, or Molson? You know, in a month or so we'll have beer on tap.
And hard liquor, as well."
I enter the cafe: it's a stylish place dedicated to the memories of Elvis
Presley. The famous singer's mannequin stands in the corner. The cafe's
colours are pink, blue, and green, the way they liked it in 50s. Actually,
Planet Java style and design are a retro replica of late 50, the times
of Beatles, Rolling Stone, and, of course, Elvis Presley. Victor says:
"I love the music of 50s and early 60s. At home I have a good collection.
Besides, I'm downloading old music from the web all the time. You see
these juke boxes here? There is one on each table." I take a quarter and
place it in the slot. The customers, myself including, can enjoy Love
Me Tender. My little son puts a penny in the slot. This time the
machine spits the coin out. The co-owner says that these old jukeboxes have
one defect: once you insert the wrong coin, you have to take the box apart
and extract the cash. Juke boxes are real: they come from 50s. They are
also hard to maintain. Old lamps can be only served in Seattle. The most
expensive one, it's not on the table, - it sits in the hall, - costs 25
thousand dollars. Wow!
The cafe per se is arranged in the mode of the so-called 'Fountain of Soda', the drink that used to be popular once. Surprisingly, but it's still in fashion. They make Italian soda in the cafe, and serve it in fancy frozen glasses.
The day I happened to come and check out Planet Java was a really busy one for the staff. The Cranberry Festival was under way in Fort Langley. Six of the staff were cooking, and serving the clients.
This is not Victor's first business. He used to own a butcher shop in North Vancouver and also a butchery on Robson Street. Thus he knows what to do in order not to spoil the newly acquired cafe. Besides, he does lots of work himself: stands at the register, makes ice creams, pours sodas, etc.
The hamburger, served under the name Elvis, was just great. They use their
own unique sauce and some secret herbs to spice it up. Their salsa was
also cool. There are more than ten menus for breakfast, and lunch varieties
are more than twenty: delicious sandwiches, soups, etc. Cafe opens at
9 in the morning and closes around 6. However the co-owner wants it to run
until nine at night on Saturdays and Sundays. There is also a satellite
antenna, so you can listen to Fifty Goldies. Cafe has one hundred and
twenty seats, there are two halls with the bar and a counter in the middle.
It's worth visiting and enjoying the atmosphere of 50s and 60s with Elvis
Presley's regalia and artefacts, and having a nice sandwich with a beer.
